Introduction

The Press Commission of India has constituted a review committee to review the news coverage in Andhra Pradesh by the regional print and broadcast media. As part of the review, a 4-membered committee is assigned to submit an inspection report to the review committee. The inspection team observed and noted their findings over a period of 6 months from June 2022 to December 2022, by closely observing the workings of all the 9 newspapers and 18 broadcast news channels in Andhra Pradesh. The following are the findings.

Findings

  • Debates on prime time shows on all channels have merely 12% experts in the topic and are heavily dominated by working or former politicians 85% of the time.

  • National news is covered for 5 hours while state news is covered for 9 hours and other regional news is covered for 4 hours in 95% of all the channels.

  • Of all the 9 newspapers, regional news only made 15 times on the front page in 6 months.

  • All the newspapers constituted an average of 100 articles regarding the political happenings against 6 articles that criticized government policies.

  • Surprisingly, no criticism of welfare schemes or investment related policies appeared in print media.

  • Entertainment related articles appeared everyday in daily newspapers and every week in the subsidiary magazines.

  • While ABN, NTV and TV5 have covered the most of the news criticizing the state government, Sakshi, HMTV and Raj News have covered the least of the news criticizing the state government.

  • Political affiliations are noted in certain broadcast and print media as shown in their ownership.

  • The rural areas have been covered for 51% while the municipalities and cities have been covered for 45% of the news on broadcast channels.
